Gullah Me, Gullah You Gullah Geechee Cultural Series
Presented by Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association, and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra
Join us for an inspiring evening in the Gullah Geechee Cultural Series featuring the powerful new documentary The Spirit We Move With developed by the Gullah community of Hilton Head Island with Hilton Head’s Omolola Campbell serving as executive producer in partnership with award-winning director Andrew Maguire.
The Spirit We Move With explores the rich history and enduring culture of the Gullah Geechee community on Hilton Head Island, descendants of enslaved West and Central Africans who gained freedom prior to Emancipation. Through immersive storytelling and intimate interviews, the film traces how generations have preserved traditions, language, and identity on the island. Deeply human in its approach, the documentary offers a moving portrait of cultural survival, resilience, and the power of heritage passed from generation to generation.

Chef Nettie Williams has prepared an authentic menu including entrée selections of jerk chicken served with peas and rice, and grilled peppers, zucchini, onions and squash, and corn bread (GF); meatloaf in a tomato sauce, peas and rice, and grilled peppers, zucchini, onions and squash, and corn bread; and fennel and bean soup made with great northern beans, tomatoes, spinach and white pinto beans, a scoop of white rice, and buttered corn bread (V). All three meals are preceded by a green salad course with gluten-free dressing. Gluten free cinnamon swirl crumb cake completes each meal.

Gullah Me, Gullah You Gullah Cultural Series is our community’s exciting music event series celebrating all things Gullah Geechee. Mostly music, but also storytelling, history, food, and culture; each performance, modeled in the spirit of a television talk-show setting but reversed as a musical show-talk event, heralds local Gullah citizens for their contributions to our community and celebrates Gullah Geechee guest artists from the entire Gullah Geechee Corridor. Held at SoundWaves, Gullah Me, Gullah You introduces many touching and beautiful stories as well as challenges of native Islanders right here on Hilton Head Island and throughout the Gullah Geechee Corridor.
In support of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association and the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island, this series is sure to entertain and enlighten all! Bonus: Gullah cuisine dinner option available before the show.
