More about the artists:
Marcus Roberts – Piano
Hailed as “the genius of the modern piano,” Marcus Roberts is celebrated worldwide for his groundbreaking fusion of jazz and classical music. A Jacksonville, FL native, Roberts lost his sight at age five and began teaching himself piano soon after. He studied classical piano at Florida State University under Leonidas Lipovetsky and was featured in 60 Minutes’ “The Virtuoso.” His Grammy-nominated recording Portraits in Blue (Sony Classical) reimagined Rhapsody in Blue and launched decades of acclaimed performances with orchestras around the globe. A prolific composer and recording artist, Roberts has released numerous albums through his label, J-Master Records, and leads the multigenerational ensemble Modern Jazz Generation. His recent honors include the 2024 Dorothy and David Dushkin Award and a Doris Duke Performing Arts Technology Lab grant.
Martin Jaffe – Double Bass
A rising star on the jazz scene, Martin Jaffe is known for his deep groove and lyrical sound that bridges jazz, classical, and Brazilian influences. Originally from Massachusetts, he studied at Columbia and The Juilliard School with legendary bassists Ron Carter and Ray Drummond. Named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and winner of the International Society of Bassists’ Jazz Competition, Jaffe has performed at the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center and appeared with Marcus Roberts, Wynton Marsalis, and Sergio Mendes. He also co-leads an innovative trio blending jazz improvisation with chamber and world music traditions.
Jason Marsalis – Drums
The youngest son of jazz legend Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis has anchored the Marcus Roberts Trio for nearly 30 years. Renowned for his precision, creativity, and musical depth, Marsalis brings classical nuance and rhythmic mastery to every performance. In addition to his work with Roberts, he leads his own acclaimed vibes quartet and has released five solo albums. Marsalis has performed with symphony orchestras worldwide and continues to inspire the next generation of jazz musicians through performance and mentorship.
