Celebrating Women’s History Month – Women of Mitchelville Preserving The Gullah Geechee Legacy
Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at SoundWaves (6 pm doors; 6:30 dinner; 7:30 pm concert)
Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association, and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are honored to welcome four remarkable women whose voices help preserve and share the history, culture, and legacy of Hilton Head Island. Each of these authors is a direct descendant of the historic Mitchelville community, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States.
Through their entrepreneurship, writing and storytelling, Courtney C. Young, Beverly Patterson Davis, Johnnie P. Mitchell, and Carolyn Grant continue the tradition of passing down the rich heritage of the Gullah people—ensuring that the business minds and stories of family, freedom, faith, and community remain alive for future generations.
Their work not only documents the past, but also celebrates the strength of the women and families who shaped Hilton Head Island and the enduring legacy of Mitchelville.
Chef Tracey Young of Da Shack Comfort Goodness Catering has prepared an authentic menu including meal options of crab cake, mac & cheese, and fresh green beans (GF); baked chicken, red rice, and collards (GF); collards with smoked turkey, and fresh green beans (GF); and mac & cheese, red rice, and fresh green beans (V) (GF). All entrees come with a dessert.
