presented by The Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island, Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, and Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, and Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association

Tuesday, May 7th at SoundWaves
(6:30pm dinner; 7:30pm concert)

Then, Now and Tomorrow

Join us at SoundWaves as our artistic advisor, Lavon Stevens has sculpted a contemplative reflection on the cultural trends and contemporary challenges in the Gullah Geechee community beginning with a bit of historical perspective and continuing through today and also forecasting the future. He’s secured the leadership of Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association (NIBCAA) board chair, Dr. Roselle L. Wilson, to lead this discussion, who through her community-focused lens will steer our Gullah Geechee cultural excursion through time.

Our musical guest is Grammy award winning tenor saxophonist, Kebbi Williams, son of local jazz legend Earl Williams. Kebbi is one of contemporary music’s whirlwind improvisers. The imaginative multi-instrumentalist/composer/producer/arranger/teacher resists categorization. His innovative sound drives, blends and jumpstarts all music genres. His playing and compositions create a sound that is uniquely and undeniably his own. Avant-garde jazz, hip-hop, Afro-beat, gospel, electronica, classical and fiery rock are all loops that Kebbi interweaves with passion and edge.

The Atlanta native received both an undergraduate degree and master’s in jazz studies from prestigious Howard University. At the age of 22, he won the Jazz Instrumental Soloist Category (college division) award from Downbeat Magazine. Kebbi launched his professional career as a much in demand studio and touring musician. OutKast, the legendary Donald Byrd, Cee-lo Green, Mos Def, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, Bilal, Oteil Burbridge, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Russell Gunn, Julie Dexter and iconic Betty Carter are among the elite musicians and vocalists who jumped off Kebbi’s unique horn. He is also an original member and presently touring for the ninth year with the Tedeschi Trucks Band (with whom he won the Grammy in 2012 in the Blues Album category.)

Chef Whitmire of Gullah Goodies has prepared an authentic menu including meal options of Lowcountry shrimp gumbo with Carolina gold rice, corn muffin, and a mixed greens salad (GF); Lowcountry chicken perloo, corn muffin, and a mixed greens salad; and okra soup, corn muffin, and a mixed greens salad (V).
