GERSHWIN/BENNETT Porgy and Bess, Concert Version

Set in the 1930s in an African-American Charleston neighborhood known as Catfish Row, Porgy and Bess centers on the tragic love story of the cripple beggar Porgy, the beautiful cocaine addict Bess, and her abusive partner Crown- featuring such iconic songs as Summertime, It Ain’t Necessarily So, and I Got Plenty of Nothing. In 1956, Robert Russell Bennett incorporated the principal musical numbers from the opera into one continuous work for concert performance to include mezzo and baritone soloists and chorus.
