MEET BARBARA ALTMAN, CELLO

Maybe 25 years?—

BARBARA ALTMAN headsho

♫ places

Barbara was born and grew up in Sherman Oaks, California, in the hills overlooking the San Fernando Valley. It was beautiful and she still misses it. Now she calls Macon, Georgia home.

♫ music choices

“I played violin in elementary school, loved music but not violin!  They wouldn’t let me switch to cello so I did that when I went to junior high (I was 13).  I loved the sound and everything about cello and just had to play it. I named my cello Limoncello 😊.”

Education:

“I studied with Gretchen Geber in Van Nuys, California until I went to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. I was a student of Ronald Leonard and received my Bachelor and Master of Music in Cello Performance and Literature with honors from Eastman.”

Listen To:

“Celtic music. The Barra-MacNeils (a Canadian musical group from Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia).

I’ve made several trips to the Celtic Colours Music Festival in Nova Scotia to listen and soak up Canada and traditional Celtic music.”

♫ what’s the best thing a music teacher ever told you?

“No specific words or incidents, but both of my teachers provided constant constructive criticism while never discouraging me. With both teachers I always felt supported and inspired to do more.”

♫ if you hadn’t become a musician, what would you be doing?

“I can’t even imagine not being a musician!”

♫ when you’re not performing or practicing…

“Gardening (both vegetables and flowers), bird watching, reading, hiking, studying about bears (go figure!).”

♫ ribs or seafood?

“Seafood!”
