FROM THE PODIUM
“The Melting Pot” is a frequent metaphor for the American experience popularized in the United States by the 1904 play The Melting Pot, written by Israel Zangwill about a Russian Jewish family who fled the 1903 Kishinev Massacre for America, where they could live in a place where all ethnicity would “melt away.” Although an ideal of a homogeneous population that all dines on the same food, jives to the same music and wears the same clothing might suit some, I believe what makes our country so incredibly dynamic is all the special things that people from the entire world bring to this place we all call home. Not just the food, or the culture, but a mind-set and spirit to succeed.
I like the concept of our nation as a mosaic, where everyone in America brings their own special piece to create our great panorama. The cultural heritage, experiences and perspectives that people bring with them from around the world are like the pieces of a giant mosaic—each distinctive in color, shape, texture, and each beautiful in and of itself. And yet, when all those individual pieces are put together they create an enormous picture of incredible depth and vibrancy that is so much more than the mere collection of those individual parts. As a mosaic, the American experience becomes so much more multidimensional and nuanced, and expresses the enormous opportunity and promise of a diverse society.
“Ellis Island—The Dream of America” is a love-letter to those who have brought the world to this place. It tells the story of the immigrant experience through Ellis Island over a century ago, and resonates in the amazing cultural mosaic we enjoy here today.

From the Corner Office
Back in 2022, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra adopted a strategic plan. Given the level of uncertainty at that time—with everyone still trying to assess what the post-pandemic world would look like—the plan was relatively conservative. As our Strategic Planning Committee oversaw implementation of that plan, they reviewed the vision and mission statements and, for the first time, identified core values for the HHSO. Following are the results that were formally adopted on May 22, 2025:
VISION: Music for Everyone Everywhere
MISSION: To inspire, enrich, and unite the Lowcountry through excellent live music that is embraceable by all
CORE VALUES: We value and celebrate:
- – Artistry
- – Collaboration
- – Community
- – Diversity
- – Education
- – Stewardship
The Strategic Planning Committee was prepared to launch a new planning effort this season when we were approached by the USCB Center for Strategic Planning, a team of respected professionals that started helping Lowcountry non-profits in 2022. Funding to cover their costs was provided through a grant from the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and a generous HHSO Board member.
The effort began a few weeks ago with surveys that were electronically distributed to selected individuals in four constituency groups: HHSO Board, HHSO Staff, HHSO Donors and Patrons, and Community Partners. Thank you to those who participated in the survey. The results of these surveys will be presented to a Task Force that includes representatives from all four constituency groups during an all-day workshop in early January. The beginnings of a 24-month plan will result and will be reviewed by our Strategic Planning Committee and others. We hope to have a final draft to present to the HHSO Board of Directors for adoption in February.
One additional benefit of working with the USCB team is that they will help monitor progress on our 24-month plan.
It is our hope that we create an ambitious plan, one that challenges the HHSO and the community to fully realize our potential as an artistic and economic driver in the Lowcountry. Stay tuned!

A SoundWaves Resolution For Everyone To Keep
Happy New Year to all of you, my music-loving friends who visit me to enjoy the incredible concerts happening here within my walls and beneath my rafters. Yes, we’ve reached another year’s end filled with awe-inspiring music and all that delicious food served on our cabaret evenings!
Oh, Did I have some work done this Fall? Well, yes, thank you for noticing. Some good friends came by on a Saturday a couple months back and applied a fresh coat of paint to a couple of my walls. Yes, I do look good, don’t I? It’s a new shade and one that I think suits me, Dusty Heather, they call it.
Anyway, enough about me. Let’s talk a bit about what 2026 is going to bring. With so many musical offerings on the calendar again this coming year, it’s going to be difficult for me to decide on just one. I am particularly partial to those concerts with food just beforehand. Mm mm those Gullah meals are irresistible. And, that recent string quartet holiday program simply was a delight. I know there are more of those ahead too.
Pressed to choose one, though, I think I would like to tell you all about a show titled Cinematic Sounds. This is the February 15th edition of Coastal Home Supper Club which features movie soundtracks and unforgettable themes from Hollywood classics to even a couple cult films. Returning to perform at this concert is vocalist Richie Cook, whom I haven’t seen in ages. I’m sure he’ll notice my walls… Anyway, titles he and others are to perform include Skyfall, Moon River, Shallow, Footloose, I Will Always Love You, and more… If I only had feet to move and toes to tap… <sigh>
So, it’s time that I offer my new years’ resolution. I resolve in 2026 to be the most welcoming live music venue here on Hilton Head Island, irresistible to all of you so that you hopefully will resolve to visit me often and to tell your friends, “I’ll see you at SoundWaves.” — SoundWaves

FROM THE OTHER END OF THE HALL
As the song goes, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” when we enjoy Holiday celebrations and traditions with family and friends. At the same time, we reflect fondly on our successes over the last twelve months, and we eagerly anticipate major events in the year to come with great excitement!
The first of those is indeed a big one for the HHIPC, since 2026 marks 30 years since our very first competition! We will kick off our milestone anniversary celebration at our annual Musical Feast gala fundraiser, which is Tuesday, January 20 at the Hilton Beachfront Resort & Hotel! We will reminisce about our first three decades, as we recognize our successful mission to promote and nurture talented young pianists from all over the world.
In addition to a sumptuous three-course dinner, you will enjoy an intimate solo recital from internationally acclaimed pianist George Li (Silver Medalist at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition and recipient of a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant). And to begin the evening, we welcome the HHSO String Quartet—comprised of the orchestra’s principal string players—who will serenade us with a Haydn quartet, and then collaborate with George for the rousing opening movement of Schumann’s ever-popular Piano Quintet! Plus, we will have a live auction with numerous attractive items, including concert and culinary experiences, along with two luxury European vacations!
Invitations were emailed to all the HHIPC and HHSO supporters, friends and fans in early December, so hopefully you received yours. But, if not, you can also use this link to purchase your tickets and order your meals, or to make a non-attending contribution to help commemorate 30 years of the HHIPC!
This will indeed be a memorable evening, combining world-class music and delicious food in a warm family atmosphere, so please join us on January 20 for this landmark celebration!
I hope to see you soon in 2026, and in the meantime, I wish you and your family a joyous Holiday, and a very happy, healthy and musical New Year!

FROM THE BOARD ROOM

Next season, the HHSO will celebrate its 45th anniversary. It is a significant milestone – one that invites us to reflect on past achievements as well as to plan for the organization’s bright future.
The Strategic Planning Committee has begun its work to create a bold, new and exciting 2 year strategic plan. In conjunction and cooperation with the efforts of the strategic planning committee, a task force has been appointed to explore ways to enhance our brand and improve our messaging. The task force is led by Marketing Consultant, Kelley Finley, and includes 3 staff and 3 board members.
While the orchestra and its ambitious orchestral season series will always be the heart and soul of the organization, the HHSO has grown and expanded well beyond its traditional platform. The organization is committed to community engagement and accessibility. With the addition of SoundWaves and its myriad offerings and diverse programs, to the expansion of the HHIPC and the addition of The Chamber Music Institute, the HHSO has become a vibrant cultural hub for the lowcountry region. However, while programming and audience experience has grown and evolved, the HHSO’s current brand identity remains static. It does not reflect the artistry, energy, diversity and sophistication of today’s HHSO.
The goal of the task force is to:
1. Update and enhance the organization’s visual identity.
2. Unify the HHSO Family through consistent design and messaging standards.
3. Position the HHSO as a cultural leader and destination for live music for residents and visitors alike.
4. Develop a cohesive voice and digital presence that attracts new and diverse audiences and deepens our community connections.
We hope you will support the efforts of the Task Force and be pleased with its recommendations. We welcome your comments.

Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra (HHSO) Racial Equality Statement
The HHSO affirms that all races are equal. We intentionally and systematically support HHSO policies and practices in our organization that promote opportunities for full advancement of African-Americans and other marginalized groups that have been denied equal access and opportunity. Our local situation gives good historical example of the possibility for transformative change. That example is Mitchelville, one of our Lowcountry’s treasures. It was a bold and brave experiment of 1861, before the Emancipation Proclamation, in whichformerly enslaved people were granted land and provisions to build homes and to establish a working town that was self-governing. The HHSO recognizes that self-governance and mastery depend on equal opportunity. So, we seize the current adverse racial situation as our opportunity to become a positive change agent that will actively pursue diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all of our policies, programs, staff, committees, and Board.
The HHSO recognizes that racial inequity is systemic throughout our society. The HHSO therefore will examine its operations to address any racial inequality in our organization. We will work to eradicate any such adverse influence and to ensure that racial equality is integral to our mission and to implementation of our administrative and programming activities. We commit to all processes that will help us achieve our racial equity goal. We are committed to a racially inclusive approach in all that we do because we respect and value diverse racial heritages and know that hearing diverse voices will enrich what we have to offer.
Programs and Musicians: We shall schedule more performances of orchestral music by composers of color. We will be conscientious in recruitment, hiring, and advancement of musicians of color for all standard programs and competitions.
Staff: We will be deliberate in our effort to attract racially diverse staff in our recruitment and hiring activities and commit to providing equitable advancement opportunities for them.
Board of Directors: The HHSO Board pledges to seek increased representation of racially diverse directors and actively encourage opportunity for their Board leadership.
We respect diverse life experiences and work to ensure that all voices are heard and valued, and commit to creating a more comprehensive action plan that addresses diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all marginalized groups.
