On Tuesday, March 22nd, the League of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra held its 10th Annual Fashion Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction at the Country Club of Hilton Head after a two year hiatus. The mood was upbeat and enthusiastic as 180 women enjoyed a three-course lunch after perusing approximately 50 silent auction items. Fashions were presented by Evelyn & Arthur from the Wexford Shopping Center. The Presenting Sponsor for next year, 2023, is SM Bradford Company. They provided a sneak peek of their fashions at the end of this year’s show. We raised significant funds for our beloved Orchestra and attendees enjoyed a friendraising event. Many thanks to all League members who contributed their time and talents.

One of the benefits of being a League member involves an invitation to our annual Spring Fling, which will also occur after a two-year absence, on Wednesday, May 11th. The party will be held at Indigo Hall in Indigo Run, from 5 – 7 pm. Spouses or guests are welcome to attend for a $25 surcharge, payable at the door.

Invitations are en route and we encourage prompt response, as the deadline is May 4th for the venue. Any questions may be directed to Carol at 843-415-5361. This promises to be a festive evening as well as the Annual Meeting. The Volunteer of the Year will be announced and the new Board of Directors will be introduced. We look forward to seeing you there!

MUSICALES

Violinist Nina Sandberg and Pianist Chee-Hang See perform at the March 6, 2022, Musicale at Linda and Ray Moloney’s home

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the Musicales were started later in the League year. Consequently, there were only five Musicales scheduled this past season instead of the normal six. A special thanks goes to Mario Incorvaia for bringing us such excellent musical programs. He really outdid himself! I could not have made it through without the expertise of Eileen Durkin, who was my assistant, and Terry Hicks, who was in charge of reservations. They were irreplaceable. Stan Cooke, Peter Forbes and Jerry Durkin also need to be recognized for all the work they did to make the Musicales successful: setting up host homes, taking care of parking and acting as bartenders.

Plans are already being made for next year’s Musicales. The first one will be held on Thursday, October 13th at the Port Royal Beach House.

Members who go away for the summer need to send their summer addresses to Judy Walsh in order to receive their membership renewal form and Musicale invitation. Please don’t delay!

Twenty international competitors arrived in early March and were hosted in the homes of friends and supporters of the International Piano Competition. These young adults came to the competition from across the globe and performed for over $34,000 in cash prizes. The first place winner, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, from Canada, won a $15,000 prize underwritten by the Nan and Charles Strauch family and will perform October 14, 2022, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He will also have a CD recording on the Steinway and Sons label and a concerto performance during the HHSO 2022-23 season. Jaeden won the 67th Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona just 3 weeks after winning the HHIPC!

Second prize was $10,000, underwritten by Mary and Mike Briggs and Joan and Charles Dattlebaum. The winner was Illia Ovcharenko from Ukraine. Third prize was $5,000, underwritten by Mary Ann and Terry Putnam, was awarded to Seongwoo Moon from the Republic of South Korea.

The Sasha Gorodnitzki Memorial Prize was awarded to Anthony Ratinov, from the United States.

It was a wonderful 10 days and we are all looking forward to the 2023 competition.

On a sad note, Mona Huff is retiring as Director of the HHIPC! We will all miss her enthusiasm, support, and tender loving care of the HHIPC! She has been the Competition Directort since 2011 and has nurtured and supported the competition and all those competitors throughout the years!

Her fundraising and creative efforts in establishing the BravoPiano! festival has raised the profile of the HHSO and HHIPC among all pianists and music lovers. Thank you to both Mona and Joe for their countless hours, financial contributions, leadership, and service to our community.

SOVA ROUNDTABLE

SAVE THE DATE!

Futurists predict that the decade of the 2020’s will see a resurgence of interest and support for the arts and entertainment. Much like the first roaring 20’s spawned by World War I, our world is emerging from another war, the war on Covid.

Americans are tired of being confined. We are ready to get back to living and having fun. Americans are emerging from the war on Covid with money to spend and a pent-up desire to experience live performances on stage, in concert halls, at jazz clubs, and a plethora of outdoor venues.

And they are ready and willing to financially support those arts organizations that provide them with music and entertainment. In other words, AMERICANS ARE READY TO ROAR!

Please join us in Hilton Head on October 12 – 14, 2022, as southeast orchestra professionals and southeast orchestra volunteers join together to explore the opportunities and challenges of the new Roaring 20’s!

In the months ahead, watch for RONDO and ME, SOVA’s on-line publications for interesting facts and information about what’s in store for you in October. And check your inbox and your mailbox for detailed Roundtable information and a registration form. In the meantime, put the dates, October 12 – 14, 2022, on your calendar and make plans to attend.
