Jocelyn Zhu Wins Concerto Competition in Hilton Head
Mary Woodmansee Green, Music Director, and Concerto Competition Director, Joe Gimbel are pleased to announce that Jocelyn Zhu of Canton MS was the first place winner of the 2010 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition held on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
Jocelyn Zhu is the daughter of Jeff and Jane Zhu. She played thefirst movement of the Vieuxtemps, Concerto #5 in A minor, Op. 37 in the Competition.
Jocelyn studies violin with Mr. Song Xie of Belhaven University in Jackson. She has served as concertmistress of the Mississippi All State Orchestra for the past three years. She served as concertmistress of the Premier Orchestra Institute Philharmonic Orchestra. She was the winner of the 2008 Mississippi State MTNA Junior Strings Competition. In 2009, she was a featured soloist with the Belhaven College Chamber Orchestra. and the winner of the 2009 CICAS Summer Music Festival Concerto Competition in Arkansas.
Austin Williams wins 2nd Prize in Concerto Competition in Hilton Head
Mary Woodmansee Green, Music Director, and Concerto Competition Director, Joe Gimbel are pleased to announce that Austin Williams of Acworth, GA was the second place winner of the 2010 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition held on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
Austin Williams is an 11th grade student at North Cobb High School. Austin is the son of Greg and Lisa Williams. He played thefirst movement of the Tomasi, Concerto in F Major, in theCompetition.
Austin participates in his high school’s marching band where he serves as section leader. His musical accomplishments include his participation in various Georgia Music Educator Association (GMEA) events such as district honors band, 2008 All-State Band second chair and 2009 All-State Orchestra second chair. He is performing in his second year with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. During the summer of 2009 Austin was selected to participate in the Interlochen Trumpet Institute where he studied trumpet performance and participated in master classes.
Sophie Wang Wins 3rd Prize Concerto Competition in Hilton Head
Mary Woodmansee Green, Music Director, and Concerto Competition Director, Joe Gimbel are pleased to announce that Sophie Wang of Irmo, SC was the 3rd prize winner of the 2010 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition held on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
Sophie Wang is an 8 h grade student at Dutch Fork Middle school. Sophie is the daughter of Anna Jiang and Guiren Wang.. She played thethird movement of the Mendelssohn, Concerto #1 in E minor, Op. 64 in the Competition.
Sophie studies violin with Dr. William Terwilliger. She serves as concertmistress of the South Carolina Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.. Sophie was awarded a scholarship to the Porter Pre-College Division of Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music.

Mary Woodmansee Green, Music Director, and Concerto Competition Director, Joe Gimbel are pleased to announce that Maya Johnson of Decatur, GA won Honorable Mention at the 2010 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition held on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
Violinist Maya Johnson is a 5th grade student at the Glennwood Academy in Decatur, GA and the daughter of Mark and Kozue Johnson. She played Zigeunerweisen by Sarasate. Maya performed on a ¾ violin made by Tetsuo Matsuda and a bow made by John Norwood Lee of Chicago, which are on loan to her through the generosity of Gabriel Ben-Dashan and the Bein and Fushi Company of Chicago. Her music teacher is Sonja Foster.
