Hilton Head Youth Orchestra

Mission of the Hilton Head Youth Orchestra

"The Hilton Head Youth Orchestra provides young musicians from Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area with challenging rehearsal and performance experience in a professional environment."

About the HHYO

The Hilton Head Youth Orchestra is a vibrant organization that focuses on the performance, education and enrichment of the cultural environment of the lowcountry. Our students develop self esteem, discipline and leadership skills through large and small group performance and educational outreach. Ensembles range from our young members of the Sinfonietta to our advanced students in the Youth Orchestra. Admission into the group is by audition each year. The Hilton Head Youth Orchestra is excited to be a part of the growth and expansion of our community and is looking forward to reaching more and more young musicians over the coming years.

History of the Hilton Head Youth Orchestra

The Hilton Head Youth Orchestra was founded in 1996 by Dorothy Mauney and David Kimbell with resources from the Hilton Head Orchestra and the Hilton Head Island Foundation. It quickly evolved into two orchestras: the Sinfonia, for students with greater experience and the Sinfonietta. Over the years the orchestras have played challenging pieces by Vivaldi, Bach, Dvorak, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms and others. In recent concerts, the HHYO has been joined by the South Carolina Governor’s School Orchestra, the Savannah Arts Academy, the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra and the Hoopes Family Violin Trio. They have also played in several side-by-side concerts with the Hilton Head Orchestra (now renamed the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra) under the direction of Mary Woodmansee Green. Small ensembles have often been featured at concerts, musicales in private homes, at the Arts Center of Coastal h Carolina Arts, and other places. The HHYO has also hosted a Concerto Competition for the past 6 years. Winners of the HHSO Concerto Competition will be featured at either Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra concerts or HHYO concerts.
