HHSO Youth Concerto Competition

The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Concerto Competition was held on Saturday, February 6 at 1:30 pm at St. Luke’s Church on Pope Avenue in Hilton Head.  Ten instrumentalists from throughout the Southeastern United States were selected from a field of forty-eight applicants.

The finalists ranged in age from 13 to 18, traveling to Hilton Head from Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Mississippi. They included 7 violinists, 1 cellist, 1 viola, and xylophone.  Individual contestants have performed as a soloist with one or more orchestras, have won the Music Teachers National Association State Competition, have won the MTNA Southern Division (9 states) Competition in their classification, and have placed second in the MTNA National Finals in their classification.  The candidates have also participated in at least one major summer music festival such as Tanglewood, Interlochen, Brevard, and Meadowmount.

“This year we have the opportunity to hear some of the finest young performers who reside in the southeast”, commented Competition Director Joe Gimbel.  “They are performing professional level repertoire and have competed successfully in major competitions.”

2015 1st prize winner, Goeun Melody Sim, is returning to Hilton Head to perform as a soloist with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra for their Valentine Romance concert on February 14 and 15, 2016.  She will play the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op.47.

Tickets are $15 and are available online at hhso.org, and will be available at the door the afternoon of the performance.  For further information, call the HHSO office at 843-842-2055.
